In Renaissance Spain, a marques held a hereditary rank below that of a duque (duke) and a conde (count). The ranks of Spanish nobility below a king or queen were as follows: principe (prince), duque (duke),marques (marquis), conde (count), vizconde (viscount), baron, and senor, which would be the equivalent of a knight. The title has fallen out of use according to Wikipedia.
