LEGENDS OF THE FALL - Tristan?

Did Tristan love Susannah? Did he love Isabel? Did he love anyone? I just watched this film and thought it was heartbreakingly beautiful - why couldn't he and Susannah be together??! Also, felt very sorry for Alfred. Though obv can see why Tristan got all the attention!!
